DIY Deodorant Creme
Good morning! Not long ago, I made the move to eliminate as many toxins from my everyday beauty products as reasonably possible. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and absorbs (and purges) toxins though it’s porous surface. This got me thinking about how many potentially harmful chemicals I’m putting onto myself each and every day. Given my history of allergies and sensitivities, I decided I needed to tackle what seemed to be a daunting task to swap out my beauty routine with all natural products. This switch was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be. There are so many high quality all natural plant based hair products, toothpaste, and lotions available that it made that portion of the switch really easy. The product I had the most difficulty with was deodorant. I tried a number of different all natural brands but none held up to the old aluminum containing standby. As much as I didn’t want aluminum spread on my pits any longer, I also didn’t want to smell like I’d just been “sweatin’ to the oldies.”
After some research on DIY Deodorant, I found a combination of simple real food ingredients that meets my standards. This recipe combines coconut oil, shea butter, baking soda and arrowroot powder (cornstarch will also work).
This DIY Deodorant solved all my problems in a matter of a few minutes. I whipped up some ingredients, placed them in a jar and was on to experiment with how well it worked. I have to tell you its performance knocked my socks off!!! Not only did it leave me still fresh by the end of the day, it outperformed the old aluminum containing deodorants. Yep, amazingly, I had finally found an all natural DIY Deodorant that’s cheap and fast to make and is both better for my body and better at keeping me stink free.
What I find most fascinating about this DIY Deodorant is that you could actually eat it…not that you’d want to and I wouldn’t recommend it. But it’s made of quality ingredients that could be ingested without causing harm. Pretty cool huh?! It goes without saying, I feel really good about using this every day. I even mixed up a batch for my husband and he also gave it a great review and continues to choose this over the former aluminum containing brands. If you want to add a little fragrance to your DIY Deodorant, add your favorite essential oils. There are essential oils that also boost the stink fighting power such as tea tree oil or oregano, both of which have anti-bacterial properties.
- 3 Tbsp Coconut Oil
- 2 Tbsp Shea Butter
- 3 Tbsp Baking Soda
- 2 Tbsp Arrowroot Powder or cornstarch
- essential oils (for fragrance, optional)
- Melt oil and shea butter either in a saucepan or in the microwave.
- Mix in baking soda and arrowroot.
- Add essential oils if desired. I love a little ylang ylang with vanilla and my husband's fragrance of choice is a mix of cedarwood, oregano and vanilla.
- Place mixture in a 4oz lidded jar and store at room temperature or cooler.
